Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Muscle relaxing injections of Botulinum toxin are used to relax overactive facial muscles and reduce and help prevent the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to reduce excessive sweating in the armpits, hands or feet and this treatment will typically last 7 months.

Wrinkles are caused by the skin losing elasticity as you age, long term effects such as muscle contractions from smiling, frowning and laughing can also cause wrinkles. They’re also worsened by sun damage and smoking. Injections are given into the muscles, temporarily putting them to sleep for a period of three to six months.

The aim of the treatment is to break the habit of frowning or squinting to reduce the appearance of the lines and also reduce the development of further facial lines.

What kind of results can I expect?

After your treatment it will take 2-3 days for the effects to start, maximum effects will be reached at around 7-10 days. The treatment may last from to 3-6 months, however with ongoing treatment the effects may last longer. These injections are used to minimise the appearance of worry lines, crow’s feet, laugh and frown lines, a further advantage is that your eyebrow area will get a natural lift.

How Clostridium botulinum Works

A number of muscle relaxing drugs are available under different trade names. They are based upon a purified form of the organism called Clostridium botulinum. These drugs rest the muscles that cause wrinkles, reducing the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet.

Are muscle relaxing injections right for me?

Clostridium botulinum muscle relaxing injections are not recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding and not recommended for anyone with a neuromuscular disorder.

What to expect during treatment with Clostridium botulinum

The drug is injected into the specific muscle which is to be “relaxed”. The Doctor will determine which muscle should be treated to give the result that you wish to achieve.

Most patients do not report any pain. The treatment itself only takes a few minutes and uses a very tiny needle. Some patients report very minor and temporary discomfort from the injection. Any minor redness and swelling near the injection sites will normally dissapear after an hour or so.

Muscle relaxing injections are safe and there are no known long term side effects. There is a possible temporary side effect which causes drooping of the eyelid. This rare side effect is temporary and will usually fade within 2-3 weeks.

What are the different products such as Botox®?

There are several wrinkle relaxing products that have been approved for use in the United Kingdom based on the botulinum toxin. The most widely know is perhaps Botox®. Botox® is now also marketed as Vistabel®.
