Chemical peels are used to reduce fine wrinkles, scars and blemishes by using a chemical exfoliating solution. This helps peel away the outer layers of the skin, thereby allowing new skin to regenerate. The different types of chemical peels available are normally categorised by the strength of the acid solution used for the peel and how deeply it will affect the skin. The three common groups are known as Superficial Peels, Medium Depth Peels and Deep Peels.
Medium Depth Peels and Deep Peels offer more substantial results but as a consequence, these peels require significantly greater recovery time when compared to a Superficial Peel. If you are looking for a gentler effect, you may wish to consider a Superficial Peel.
We select products from a number of manufacturers, allowing us to match the right product for your particular skin type, condition and desired result. We are currently using products from Mene & Moy, Sesderma, Skintech and Dermaceutics.
From Dermaceutics we utilise their Spot Peel which is a depigmenting medium depth peel for the treatment of pigmentation spots, pregnancy dark spots, melasma and post inflammatory pigmentation. We also use the Dermaceutics rejuvenating Cosmo Peel, for ageing skin, smoker’s complexion, dark spots & wrinkles, and stretch marks.
What to expect during a medium depth peel
The skin is cleansed and peel applied evenly. The treated area turns whitish grey over several minutes. Cool saline compresses are then applied to neutralise the acid in the peel. The face may swell when the peel is applied, and burning or stinging lasts for about an hour after treatment.
Recovery takes a week or more, depending on how quickly you heal (older skin heals more slowly). In the five to six days after treatment, the skin may turn dark brown, with white streaks. It will itch and begin to peel, after which the skin is bright red, fading to fresh pink over the next three to six weeks.
Repeat the treatment monthly until you achieve the effect you want, and then maintain it with a peel every 6-12 months.
What to expect during a deep peel
Local anaesthetic is injected to freeze the face. You may also be sedated. The skin is cleansed and a strong peel applied and left on for around 30 minutes before being neutralised.
Patients often feel unwell after a deep peel, and experience moderate to severe pain lasting several days. The face swells in the first two days and it can be very itchy during the healing process. It takes around two weeks before the face is healed enough for you to be seen in public.
One treatment can produce dramatic results and the effects last for 10 years.
Is a medium or deep facial peel right for me?
Medium and deep peels may not be appropriate for some skin types and conditions. Deeper peels are not normally suitable for: darker, Asian or Afro-Caribbean skin; abnormally pigmented skin; those suffering from an infection on the face or facial warts; or for those with red hair and freckled skin. Suitability for treatment will be assessed during your consultation.
The deeper the peel is applied, the greater the opportunity for significant and lasting results. There is also a greater chance of experiencing side effects from the procedure. If you are not prepared for the potential side effects associated with a deeper peel, or the required follow-up skin care regime, a deeper facial peel may not be right for you.
How much do medium depth & deep facial peels cost?
Treatment costs vary. Schedule a personal consultation for more details.
