Rates of obesity in the UK are at an all time high and currently on the rise, making it a real problem. Add to this the fact that there is now so much clinical evidence linking many chronic diseases with obesity, there has never been a better time to lose weight.
There are a huge number of “slimming clinics” offering everything from over the counter herbal remedies to prepackaged meals. Many of these unlicensed and unqualified practices lead to many people spending large amounts of money only to receive poor advice and slimming pills that have no clinical evidence to even suggest they aid weight loss. This ultimately leads to poor results that make patients feel even worse and lose confidence in slimming treatment.
The main problems with many slimming clinics and their programs is that they fail to incorporate all key areas associated with weight gain.
For instance, what is the point of taking slimming pills (medically proven or not) if the patient is not eating a good healthy diet and maintaining a moderate exercise routine.
Conversely, diet and exercise are vital but if a patients hormone levels are not optimal, such as having high oestrogen levels in respect to progesterone, they suffer from oestrogen dominance and will struggle to lose weight. Oestrogen dominance is a huge problem that is not often routinely diagnosed in medical healthcare and leads to serious health issues including obesity in both men and women.
Exercise and diet are very important in maintaining a good healthy body weight and should never be overlooked. As stated earlier, hormones play a huge role in the natural predisposition of especially women to store fat. Improving hormone balance can prove essential and is usually the “missing key” in many slimming clinic programs.
There are also the prescription slimming drugs that are currently prescribed in the UK. The only one that is currently available is Orlistat – also called Xenical. Two other medicines called sibutramine and rimonabant were previously available but were removed from practice due to concerns over their safety. See the guide below for more information on Orlistat and a new highly anticipated drug coming soon to the UK.

Orlistat works by reducing the absorption of fat in the gut, thereby physically limiting the amount of fat the body can acquire from the diet. This long with a moderate diet and exercise program is clinically proven to reduce overall body weight by up to 10% in 6 months. Orlistat has been used now for many years and has a good and proven record in terms of long term results and safety. If a patient loses 5% of their body weight within 3 months, then their is little restriction on the length of time it may be prescribed for.
Belviq (coming soon)
This is the newest medical prescription drug on the market and was licensed by the FDA in the states earlier this year. It is the first drug to be licensed by the FDA in thirteen years since Orlistat.
Belviq is not currently available in the UK until next year (2013) but is a highly anticipated new drug that will be met with a high demand. Belviq works differently to Orlistat in that it controls appetite by activating certain neurotransmitter in the brain that effect appetite. The clinical evidence is positive with groups of people doubling the weightless as opposed to groups not using it. The guidelines state that people should not continue to use Belviq after more that 12 weeks if they have not lost at least 5% of their body weight.
At re-enhance our weight loss clinics are for those individuals looking for assistance with the difficult task of loosing excess weight.
Each patient is individually assessed by a doctor and advised on the best methods of weight loss for their situation. This may include, where appropriate, prescription weight loss preparations.
